Digital offset

Peculiarities of digital offset printing technology

Digital offset it is the most advanced digital printing technologies as of today. This type of printing is patented by HP company and is used exclusively in the equipment under the HP Indigo brand.

Digital offset combines all advantages of both traditional offset and digital technologies.

This is the “happy medium”, and the best choice when you need short runs quickly and with a standard quality.

As in the regular offset printing, HP Indigo uses liquid ink with the same pigments. But in digital offset printing:

  • the machine does not contain a constant printing plate, there is no need to spend money and time on the prepress process;
  • press preparation is not required, the combination of colors on the sheet comes from the first impression (saving time and paper)
  • ink is transferred to the paper completely, ink set-off is excluded;
  • impression dries instantly and is ready for post-processing immediately after being out of the machine;
  • it is not too late to make corrections in the layout at any stage of the production process;
  • the entire circulation is absolutely identical to the signal-print (there is no need to order a separate proofing and worry about the circulation matching it);
  • personalized information without loss of print speed can be introduced in any circulation;
  • HP ElectorInk ink has good adhesion to the most complex media, including film.

At the same time digital offset has advantages over standard xerographic digital machines:

  • liquid ink, which falls on the sheet, forming a natural and smooth layer of gloss, is used instead of toner powder;
  • the size of the ink droplet is much smaller than toner particles, so the image on the HP Indigo is of higher quality, close to photographic;
  • HP Indigo does not have any typical problems of digital prints (solid plate with ghost pattern, ragged edges, oily prints, shedding of toner);
  • unlike standard digital prints, impressions from digital offset are easily be scored, varnished, laminated;
  • in addition to the standard CMYK, the machine has a special section for whitewash, thereby it is possible to print even on transparent media;
  • HP Indigo is fully calibrated, it provides color consistency, even on long print runs and from order to order;
  • it allows to combine the “face” and the “turnover” in duplex printing much better than digital printers;
  • it allows to apply multiple layers of any color in one passage in the machine.

All these properties and characteristics of digital offset printing make it an indispensable technology for high-quality printing of short-run, personalization circulation, circulation with a “yesterday” deadline.

Throughout the world, 80% of photobooks are produced on this equipment, where the print quality is crucial, as well as important circulations of corporate printing, expensive catalogs of branded products, any works that require achieving uniform plates and maximum color saturation.

How does the print go?

Action 1

Preparation of the layout and sending it to the machine

Action 2

File processing by raster image processor

Action 3

Formation of images using the charge on the plate cylinder

Action 6

Ink transfer from the rubber to paper

Action 5

Ink transfer on to the blanket cylinder with rubber

Action 4

Application of HP ElectroInk ink to the plate cylinder

What materials can be used for print?

Digital offset allows you to use the widest range of materials. The most popular groups are coated papers with density from 90 to 350 g, offset papers from 80 to 320 g, cardboard, design papers of different textures and colors, thin plastic, Yupo, tracing paper.

In addition, HP Indigo is perfect for printing on self-adhesive films of all types: glossy and matte, white and transparent, with ordinary, easily removable and opaque glue, on metallized and self-destroying films.

What can be printed?

The technology of offset printing enables to produce absolutely any advertising and corporate printing. These can be flyers, leaflets, booklets, brochures, catalogs, books, presentations, certificates, folders, notebooks, calendars, business cards, letterheads, stoppers, wobblers, stickers, labels.
Unlike traditional digital printing, digital offset allows to get clear labels, sandwich labels, variable data imprinting in offset circulations, products on cardboard, Yupo, and other non-standard media.
